In school and in life after school, there are many situations that
call for the writing of a brief, accurate summary of reading. You
are frequently asked to prepare a summary of what you have
read in your textbook or in the library. Answers on examinations
often require a brief summary. People in business, in club work,
and in social work must prepare short digests of articles and
reports.

For example, instead of endeavoring to describe in a few words thehorrorsand destruction of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, a writer mightstate:

What immediately strikes the reader about this set-before even reading it-is the balance between the essays. Each answer contains only one paragraph, each of approximately equal length. The solid structure of each essay and the focus of each reflects this outward balance. Each one focuses on a completely different area of its writer’s life, another striking detail. The first focuses on his career goals, the second on his interest in history, the third on his interest in the visual arts, and the fourth on wrestling. This is a perfect example of the jigsaw puzzle approach. When put together, you have a well-rounded individual with passion, depth, and involvement in many different areas.

We will now look into fiction and non-fiction literature as two major types of literature, and also consider the various types of oral literature.

While prose and verse are the two forms of writings.

If the author for example, is writing a cook-book, his first sentence should be appealing to the sense of taste....

The third essay in this set stands out from the rest. Had the panel who were grading the compositions understood the context of this essay in light of the six others in the set, they probably would have given it more credit. Its strength lies in its funny, lighthearted approach-it shows a completely different aspect of the candidate’s personality. Without it, he would have appeared deadpan serious and probably a bit dull. However, showing the wittier side of himself strengthens the set considerably. It is a good example of allowing yourself to take a risk in one essay, as long as more serious approaches in the others balance it.

There is no sure-fire formula for essay writing. The form your essaytakes will likely vary with the nature of your evidence (quotations fromthe text, principally, or from other sources), with your sense of how thetext is structured and shaped, with your interpretation, and with yoursense of what issues are most relevant. Obviously, you will have to makesome organizational decisions. In writing on a poem, for example, do yougo through a poem stanza by stanza showing how the meaning is developed? If this is your method, be sure you avoid the pitfalls: mere paraphrase, providing an unselective running commentary, and disorganization of kindsof evidence. An alternative approach might focus on the poem aspect byaspect (the point of view, the voice, the setting, and so forth). Thepitfalls here are not being able show how the various aspects tie togetherto create meaning, and assuming that each aspect deserves equal andexhaustive treatment. Fiction is usually analyzed by considering one ormore aspects of the work in the categories of theme (ideas, meanings),and/or of fictional techniques (plot, point of view, etc.).

For example, Plutarch's 'Parallel Lives' written in the 1st century covers all famous Greek and Roman people of that time.

The Brief Prose Reader: Essays for Thinking, ..

Here is a sentence from no less academic a source than a front- pagearticle in the Times Literary Supplement: "The Frenchman, Alfred Epinas, pointed out that certain species (e.g., ants and wasps) can only face thehorrors of life and death in association." I do not know what theFrenchman actually did say; what the Englishman says he said is patentlymeaningless. We cannot know whether life holds any horror for the ant,nor in what sense the isolated wasp which you kill upon the window-panecan be said to "face" or not to "face" the horrorsof death. The subject of the article is mass behavior in man; and the humanmotives have been unobtrusively transferred from the main proposition tothe supporting instance. Thus the argument, in effect, assumes what itset out to prove--a fact which would become immediately apparent if itwere presented in a formal syllogism. This is only a small and haphazardexample of a vice which pervades whole books--particularly books writtenby men of science on metaphysical subjects.

1.A precis is a short summary. It is not a paraphrase,
which merely says in different and simpler words exactly
what the passage being paraphrased has to say. A
paraphrase may be a long as the passage itself. Aprecis
rarely is more than one-third the length of the original
selection and may be only one-fourth as long.
2.A precis gives only the "heart" of a passage. It omits
repetition and such details as examples, illustrations, and
adjectives unless they are of unusual importance.
3.A precis is written entirely in the words of the person
writing it, not in the words of the original selection.
Avoid the temptation to lift long phrases and whole
sentences from the original.
4.A precis is written from the point of view of the
author whose work is being summarized. Do not begin
with such expressions as "This author says" or "The
paragraph means." Begin as though you were summarizing
your own writing.

Essays for Thinking, Reading, and Writing.

These three well-written essays create a strong set. The first and the last would have been impressive on their own. Reading them all together magnifies their impact considerably. This student does an especially good job of targeting the school. This student focuses his first essay on his extracurriculars and relates them to why Duke would be perfect for him. He focuses the third on his Chinese background and how it relates to his career goals and academic interests. Then he also relates these interests to why Duke matches him perfectly. His favorite book provided the focus of the second essay. What makes this second essay better than others like it is that the applicant manages to put himself into the question. He does not just talk about the book, he uses it to talk about himself and stress the inquisitive nature of his personality-always a plus.
