Fourth and last, the distinctions between photography and art can be blurry. Does art include photography? Before we can consider what fine art photography is, we must first determine whether or not photography is an art.

In some shape or form, photography has importance to everyone.

What I discovered overall was that my explanations had little effect on these people. While some believed me, most were unconvinced. What I did not know then, was that the majority of those asking these questions were primarily interested in starting an argument. They knew that what I showed in my work was my vision. They asked if it was real not because they wondered about what my answer would be, but because they did not like my vision of reality. Certainly, a few – a minority — really did not understand how my work was created. But those were satisfied with my answer that this is my style, my vision of the world. Those that I am talking about here are the others, those that wouldn’t accept that answer as valid.

Between Amateur and Aesthete: The Legitimization of Photography as Art in America, 1880-1900.

The photographer must consider himself an artist in order to create art. Imagine how difficult it would be to create fine art photographs if you did not think of yourself as an artist. Further, although you might be able to create art, imagine how difficult it would be to write an artist statement if you did not believe you were an artist. The artist statement is an essential document to have when pursuing a career as an artist. It directly addresses how the artist looks at himself, his experience, approach, goals, and work. Not being able to write one would have a negative impact on your artistic career.

This photograph is actually not one that I have taken with my camera alone. Instead, it is a collage of eight photographs, stitched together in Adobe CS4 using Photomerge. The stitching setup I chose distorted the image to the point that blank areas appeared in the corners. Since I did not have additional photographs to fill-in these blank areas, and since I liked the image and wanted to finish it, I decided to clone substantial areas of the image. In doing so I truly “invented” part of the photograph using as guidelines the areas that I had photographed. The result is an image of something that does not quite exist as it is shown here. It is the work of my imagination as much as that of my camera. As such I believe it represents a work of art, as well as a combination of art and science.

Photography has given everyone the chance to become an artist by capturing light.

In this essay I will give answers to the questions above. However, I do want to point out that the primary purpose of this essay is not to answer the question “what is art?” but rather “what is fine art photography?”

I also want to point out that because of the subjective nature of art, not all readers will agree with my views on the subject. I point out some of the reasons for this situation, and I also talk about how to handle disagreements and criticisms, later on in this essay.

Is Photography a Form of Lens-Based Art?

Aleksandr Rodchenko felt that photography allowed artists to moveaway from the 'old point of view' which he associated with bourgeois 'bellybutton shots' and argued that the camera enabled less conventional views ofthe world, such as views from above and below (bird's eye and worm's eyeviewpoints), extreme close-ups and cropping. Photography was also seenas an exciting extension to natural vision, recording sights unavailable to thehuman eye. Microphotography using powerful magnifying lenses, the use ofseries of cameras to capture motion and X-rays, all extended natural vision, creating what Walter Benjamin referred to as 'the optical unconcious'. Whileavant-garde photographers were interested in photography's connection toreality, they were also concerned to dismantle and subvert the reality of thephotograph. Techniques such as photomontage, photograms, doubling andsolarisation emphasised the photograph's status as a made image and itsdistance from the real.

How Is Photography Art? Essay - 1282 Words

In the early twentieth century, with the emergence of avant-gardegroups such as Dada, Soviet-Constructivism and Surrealism, there was aradical change in approaches to photography as art. These groups weredrawn to photography's modernity and, rather than relating it to painting, they sought a new aesthetic based on the operations of the camera. Avantgardephotography tended to employ a sharp focus and often depictedmodern subjects, such as Albert Renger-Patzsch's images of industrially producedcommodities or László Moholy-Nagy's images of the Eiffel Tower.

There is another aspect to this, and that aspect is technique. Technique, in my view, is meant to be seen and should be visible. If this technique involves manipulating or enhancing the image, depending on which side of the fence you stand on, then this enhancement, or manipulation if this is what you want to call it, must be visible. Why? Because I want others to see it. Because I want my audience to see what I did to the image, see how I made my vision a reality through the use of this technique or that technique. In fact, I want this to be visible so much that starting April 2006 I am providing the master file to my images with print purchases. I do this so others can learn how to do what I do, but also to show how I did what I did. That is, I am taking advantage of one aspect of digital technology, which is that the digital image file can be duplicated countless times and still be as good as the original. Such is not the case with a negative or a transparency, whose quality degrades dramatically with each copy made from the original.
